Hunger strikes in Turkey, North Kurdistan prisons continues for 29 days

NEWS DESK – Indefinite-irreversible hunger strikes of political prisoners in İzmir Aliağa Şakran, Ankara Sincan, İzmir Menemen, Edirne and Van prisons are continuing.

The hunger strikes put to start by political prisoners in prisons where pressure and torture increased after the declaration of the State of Emergency, against right violation in prisons and isolation and prison conditions imposed upon them and in particular upon the Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan continues. The political prisoners in İzmir Aliağa Şakran, Ankara Sincan, İzmir Menemen, Edirne and Van prisons began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on February 15, the anniversary that Abdullah Öcalan was abducted and taken to Turkey from Kenya.

Information on the prisoners which began the hunger strike is as follows;

*Political prisoners in İzmir Aliağa Şakran Prison began a hunger strike against the violation of rights and arbitrary treatment in prison. While eight prisoners in Şakran T2-type Closed Prison and five prisoners in Şakran T3-type Closed Prison began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on February 15, five female prisoners in Şakran Women’s Prison announced that they began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on February 24. The hunger strike of prisoners, who began the hunger strike on February 15, have continued for 28 days and the hunger strike began by female prisoners on February 24 has continued for 19 days.

*Seven female prisoners in Ankara Sincan Prison began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on February 23 and the hunger strike has continued for 20 days.

*Four prisoners in İzmir Menemen T Type Prison began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on March 7 with the demand of an end to the exteme isolation imposed upon the Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan, a return to the negotiating table and an end to the ongoing right violations in prison. The hunger strike has continued for seven days.

*Prisoners in Siirt E-Type Closed Prison began a hunger strike over the announcement that all prisoners would be transferred to other prisons. The hunger strike ended on Saturday but prisoners said they would go on the hunger strike again because their demands weren’t met.

*Political prisoners in Van T-Type Closed Prison announced that they began an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike on March 9.

*Six prisoners in Edirne F-Type Closed Prison began a hunger strike to demand an end to the aggravated isolation imposed upon the Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan and the human rights violations and physical and psychological torture in prison. While the indefinite-irreversible hunger strike has continued for 19 days, the state of health of the strikers: Ali Kurt, Sami Geylani, Enver Baysal, Ramazan Kızıldağ, Zerdeşt Oduncu and Mazlum Bataray, is deteriorating.

All prisoners to begin a hunger strike

Prisoners of PAJK (Kurdistan Women’s Liberation Party) and PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) made a statement and announced that they would go on a hunger strike. Deniz Kaya read the declaration statement in the behalf of the prisoners and announced that they would begin a hunger strike with 5 day-long rotations between March 15 and April 15 in order to demand an end to the isolation imposed upon Abdullah Öcalan, prisoners and the human rights violations at prisons, and the destruction, attacks of Kurdish villages in North Kurdistan in the hands of the Turkish state.
